The Sewing Hub in Southampton is a welcoming, fully accessible community space offering sewing classes for beginners and events and resources for the more advances, such as overlocker courses and a regular ‘Sewing Circle’.  They also provide local people with an alterations and bespoke design/make service.

The Studio is unique in that it is a professionally equipped micro manufacturing hub, with flexible bookable ‘incubator’/co-working space for local designers and makers enabling them to bring their creations to life using Juki industrial machines, a full height cutting table, steam iron and other equipment.  They also offer a sampling and small production run service.

They are offering a free event and open day embracing ‘Second Hand September’ as part of Transition Southampton’s Green Open Homes and Businesses 2025. On Thursday 18th September 10.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m, The Sewing Hub welcomes new visitors to come and actively take part in mending/altering the items they bring.  Along with support and access to machines and equipment, textiles, ribbons, trims etc people will be able to relax and ‘sewcialise’ if they wish.

Refreshments will be provided (and donations for this would be great). Staff and volunteers value visitors having patience if we get busy as we aim to support everyone who comes along.  They will also be encouraging discussion about fast fashion and it’s impact on society and the environment as well as inviting feedback on future events and workshops.

The Sewing hub say about their building “It’s an old building and unfortunately not very sustainable. However as one tenant, we practice keeping as near as possible to zero waste, we save textiles from landfill – donations are used for teaching and making. We watch our use of energy, have a sustainability policy and encourage our service users to use public transport or cycle. We believe that teaching people to sew and informally raising awareness about fast fashion that we are helping to reduce the environmental impact of it.”

NB  The Sewing Hub is not a suitable environment for toddlers due to health and safety risks.  However, children are welcome with their parents and/or carers but must be supervised at all times.
