Green Open Homes event seeking householders to showcase environmental upgrades and lifestyle changes

This event looks to demonstrate how residents around Southampton can save money as well as reducing their environmental impact and helping wildlife.

The Green Open Homes event is returning to Southampton in September and is looking for volunteer householders to showcase actions and upgrades that have lowered their environmental impact and saved them money. Running for the 3rd time, the aim of the event is to show visitors real-life examples of what can be done by engaging with fellow Southampton residents. Householders interested in adding their home to the event’s line-up can express their interest by emailing openhomes@transitionsouthampton.org or visiting the event’s website www.greenopenhomes.org.

The event will run from 13th – 21st September. Householders can choose when their home is available and all visits will be pre-booked. Event organisers are looking for homes that demonstrate a wide variety of examples from low cost lifestyle changes to higher cost upgrades and retrofits, including:

  • Low-cost energy improvements like draught exclusion and insulation
  • Food growing or wildlife-friendly gardening practices
  • Water saving and rainwater harvesting
  • Composting
  • Transport changes like car-free living, cargo bikes or electric cars
  • Home heating upgrades like heat pumps
  • Electricity generation like Solar PV and battery installations

Co-organiser Mark Hancock said “Enabling residents to see for themselves what can be done in ordinary Southampton homes is a fantastic way to engage people, spread knowledge across our communities, and inspire personal efforts and change. We are looking for anyone who’s made eco-friendly changes to their home, garden or lifestyle that they are willing to share with others.”

Full details are available on the event’s website at www.greenopenhomes.org.

Southampton Green Open Homes is organised by Transition Southampton, a local environmental group part of the worldwide Transition Network, that runs various projects around Southampton including the Southampton Repair cafe.
